This aircraft model Tin Goose is a handmade model of the Ford Trimotor, in the colour of polished aluminium. With dimensions of 20 x 102 x 67 cm, it is a large piece that deserves a place of its own.

The story of the Trimotor

Between 1926 and 1933, only 199 Trimotors were built, in Ford's own factory. The use of corrugated metal on enormous, thick monoplane wings was a German development, devised for the Junkers JU-52 that flew the route Berlin, Rome, London. The Trimotor was used by airlines, oil companies and wealthy people. Together with the Junkers JU-52, it was a pioneer that cleared the way for the generations of aircraft fleets that would soon criss-cross the world.

Where it stands

With 102 cm as its largest dimension, this is not a desk piece but an object that claims a place: a long console, a wide cabinet, a sideboard or a shelf in a stairwell. Keep space free around it and put it outside a walkway, so that nobody catches a sleeve or a bag on it. Against a calm wall, without too many other objects nearby, the shape of the aircraft shows to best effect.

The polished look

A polished surface catches the light, so the model looks different at every angle. In side daylight that shows most strongly. Fingerprints show up well on such a surface, so pick it up under the fuselage and not by the wings.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster. Fingerprints with a slightly damp cloth and buff dry at once. Do not use abrasive agents or aggressive polish, so that the shine is kept.
